Celebrating San Juan

Today we talk about one of the most magical Spanish celebrations. The night of 23rd of June is marked out in our calendar as the shortest night of the year, when we celebrate summer has arrived (summer solstice) in a very peculiar way.

Hundreds of people gather on the shore to spend the night, meeting with friends and family. Various traditions are carried out around the bonfires: they jump these fires at 12 pm, to attract good luck; others write their wishes on paper and throw them into the fire, in order to make them happen. It is also tradition get into the water backwards to the sea, as the sea water on that night has lots of purifying properties…

Even if you don’t believe in those traditions, it is a very nice night to meet some friends and have a laugh around the fire… the sky always looks amazing on that night!
