The Spanish Language
Spanish is one of the six official languages of the United Nations, spoken by more than 500 million people around the world. It is the official language in 20 countries in Europe, the Americas, and Africa, and is widely spoken in dozens of other nations, including the United States.
Sometimes called “Castilian”, to differentiate it from other regional languages spoken in Spain such as Basque, Galician, or Catalan, the Spanish language boasts a rich literary and cultural history. Being a member of the family of Romance’s languages, understand and speak Spanish can help people master other similar languages like Italian and Portuguese, as well as giving access to great works of literature, poetry, and history.
Experts agree that learning a second language is great exercise for the brain, and can help improve thinking and cognitive skills in all aspects of learning. By speaking Spanish, you can appreciate the novel Don Quixote, the poems of Pablo Neruda, and the rich lyricism of the works of Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
