The DELE (Diploma of Spanish as a Foreign Language) is an official qualification accrediting levels of competence and command of the Spanish language, granted by the Instituto Cervantes on behalf of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport of Spain.
It could be compared to the Cambridge certification for English: these Spanish certifications were created in order to promote the Spanish language and to increase the presence of our culture internationally.
The DELE exams are designed following the guidelines of the Common European Framework of Reference of the Council of Europe, which guarantees a practical way to establish an international standard and objective measurement of the level to be achieved at each stage of education and the evaluation of results.
An official accreditation like this one must have a standard of quality that provides a high value to the applicant. And it does:
DELE examinations are offered at the six levels established in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment (CEFR), applied to and developed for Spanish in the Instituto Cervantes Curricular Plan. Levels of Reference for Spanish. Moreover, they have been designed following the guidelines of the Council of Europe’s Manual for Relating Language Examinations to the CEFR, which guarantees a practical method for establishing an international and objective standard for measuring the level to be reached in language assessment.
There are so many reasons to get a DELE qualification and so many ways in which it can help you in both, academic and personal life.
Examination dates will be the same in every country. You will be able to apply for any of the calls and levels at Instituto Mediterráneo Sol. Dates and times of the written tests are established by Instituto Cervantes, whereas dates and times of the oral tests are established by examination centers, according to their number of candidates.

Those are the fixed dates for the written tests. There will be an additional day for the oral tests, that will be set by each examination center. Candidates are tested individually, and these oral tests are usually held in the same week as the written test.

As you already know, there are different DELE levels that you can apply for: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2, corresponding to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Every level has a different exam structure that you should know perfectly before you sit for the exam.
You will find below the breakdown of every level tasks and times.
This level recognises the capacity to understand and use the most common day-today expressions and simple sentences, in order to meet common real-life needs. This exam has 4 parts:
– Reading comprehension: it has a duration of 45 minutes, and it consists of 4 tasks, 25 items in total.
– Listening comprehension: it has a duration of 20 minutes, and it consists of 4 tasks, 25 items in total.
– Written production and interaction: it has a duration of 25 minutes, and it consists of 2 tasks.
– Spoken production and interaction: it has a duration of 15 minutes, and a previous preparation of 15 minutes. It consists of 4 tasks. This part of the exam can be held on a different date.
EXAM FEES FOR 2023 = 112€
Total exam duration: 2 hours
This level recognises the Capacity to understand commonly used phrases and expressions in especially relevant experience areas, to communicate when carrying out simple everyday activities. This exam has 4 parts:
– Reading comprehension: it has a duration of 60 minutes, and it consists of 5 tasks, 30 items in total.
– Listening comprehension: it has a duration of 35 minutes, and it consists of 5 tasks, 30 items in total.
– Written production and interaction: it has a duration of 50 minutes, and it consists of 3 tasks.
– Spoken production and interaction: it has a duration of 15 minutes, and a previous preparation of 15 minutes. It consists of 4 tasks. This part of the exam can be held on a different date.

Total exam duration: 2 hours 55 minutes
This level recognises the capacity to understand the key points of texts about familiar issues, and to handle most situations in everyday life. This exam has 4 parts:
– Reading comprehension: it has a duration of 70 minutes, and it consists of 5 tasks, 30 items in total.
– Listening comprehension: it has a duration of 40 minutes, and it consists of 5 tasks, 30 items in total.
– Written production and interaction: it has a duration of 60 minutes, and it consists of 2 tasks.
– Spoken production and interaction: it has a duration of 15 minutes, and a previous preparation of 15 minutes. It consists of 4 tasks. This part of the exam can be held on a different date.

Total exam duration: 3 hours 20 minutes
This level recognises the capacity to understand the gist of complex texts and to interact with native speakers with sufficient fluency and spontaneity. This exam has 4 parts:
– Reading comprehension: it has a duration of 70 minutes, and it consists of 4 tasks, 36 items in total.
– Listening comprehension: it has a duration of 40 minutes, and it consists of 5 tasks, 30 items in total.
– Written production and interaction: it has a duration of 80 minutes, and it consists of 2 tasks.
– Spoken production and interaction: it has a duration of 20 minutes, and a previous preparation of 20 minutes. It consists of 3 tasks. This part of the exam can be held on a different date.

Total exam duration: 3 hours 50 minutes
This level recognises the capacity to understand a wide range of complex, long texts, and to express themselves effortlessly, fluently and spontaneously. This exam has 4 parts:
– Reading comprehension and use of language: it has a duration of 90 minutes, and it consists of 5 tasks, 40 items in total.
– Listening comprehension and use of language: it has a duration of 50 minutes, and it consists of 4 tasks, 30 items in total.
– Integrated skills: listening comprehension and written production and interaction. It has a duration of 80 minute s, and it consists of 2 tasks.
– Integrated skills: reading comprehension and oral production and interaction. It has a duration of 20 minutes, and a previous preparation of 20 minutes. It consists of 3 tasks. This part of the exam can be held on a different date.

Total exam duration: 4 hours 20 minutes
This level recognises the capacity to easily understand almost everything they hear or read, and to express themselves spontaneously, with a great degree of fluency and accuracy. This exam has 4 parts:
– Reading comprehension and use of language: it has a duration of 90 minutes, and it consists of 5 tasks, 40 items in total.
– Listening comprehension and use of language: it has a duration of 50 minutes, and it consists of 4 tasks, 30 items in total.
– Integrated skills: listening comprehension and written production and interaction. It has a duration of 80 minute s, and it consists of 2 tasks.
– Integrated skills: reading comprehension and oral production and interaction. It has a duration of 20 minutes, and a previous preparation of 20 minutes. It consists of 3 tasks. This part of the exam can be held on a different date.
EXAM FEES FOR 2023 = 228€
Total exam duration: 5 hours 05 minutes
Each part of the exams can score up to 25 points, equal to 25% of the total punctuation, with a maximum of 100 points in total. You will need a minimum of 20 points in every part in order to pass the exam. A minimum of the 60% of the tasks must be done correctly.
Preparing for a DELE exam can be tough. It can be difficult just by looking at examples, as you need to practice hard and being corrected, in order to acquire a good level of Spanish before your test.
Instituto Mediterráneo Sol offers DELE preparation courses, for all levels: these courses are taught by our own experienced teachers, who are also DELE examiners and will help you improving your level of Spanish, gaining confidence and learning all the exam parts.
The DELE preparatory courses will help the students to become familiar with the exams structure, timing and types of exercises according to each level.
You will practice with examples of every task of your level, and our teachers will guide you in order to improve your Spanish. Furthermore, these courses cover the four main skills:
You can choose the number of classes of your course, between 2 classes per day or 4 classes per day (for one week minimum).
Both course contents are the same, although the course of 4 classes per day will go in depth thoroughly with most of the tasks. The courses of 2 classes per day are designed to complement other course of Spanish, but can be offered as single courses, too.
Course fees:
– DELE Preparation course, 2 classes per day for 1 week = 205€
– DELE Preparation course, 4 classes per day for 1 week = 315€
– DELE A2 Preparation course, 4 classes per day (as part of the nationality process) for 1 week = 160€ (Students will need to prove they are obtaining the Spanish citizenship)
