DO I NEED A VISA?

For stays of less than 90 days:

It is not necessary to apply for a visa.

For stays of more than 90 days:

Students of:

  • The European Union
  • Iceland
  • Liechtenstein
  • Norway
  • Switzerland

Should register as citizens of the European Union, in the first three months from arrival.

For the rest of the countries, with some exceptions, it will be necessary to apply for a visa. And if the stay is more than 6 months, students are also required to apply for the TIE (Foreign Identity Card) within one month of arrival.

VISA TYPES

Short term (less than 90 days)

VISADO DE ESTANCIA (Schengen visa)

It allows you to stay in Spain for up to 90 days, which can be followed or divided into periods of 180 days.

This visa is not for profit, so it does not entitle you to work. They allow free movement through the Schengen area.

Long term (more than 90 days)

They are national visas for stays longer than 3 months, which can be replaced by a residence permit (before the validity of the visa expires). They also allow free movement through the Schengen area.

STEPS TO REQUEST A VISA

Requirements that the student must meet

IMPORTANT: this information is always indicative. Each student must request the specific requirements from the consular office, since these may vary from one country to another, or may change depending on the socio-political situation at the time.

Students who want to apply for a visa must meet the following requirements:

Have contracted authorized medical insurance (repatriation expenses, complete medical assistance, emergencies and €30,000 coverage).

*IPREM: The Multiple Effects Public Income Indicator (IPREM) is an index used in Spain as a reference for the granting of aid, subsidies or unemployment benefits. It was created in 2004 to replace the Minimum Interprofessional Wage as a reference for this aid.

In this way, the IPREM grew at a slower rate than the SMI, facilitating access to aid for the most disadvantaged family economies, while the SMI would remain restricted to a work environment.

This accommodation document must contain:

  • Proof of payment of the fee.
  • Two recent passport photos (less than 6 months old).
  • Valid passport (original and photocopy)

  • Sufficient financial resources, document apostilled or legalized by a notary (it is necessary to have 100% of the IPREM*.

  • Certificate of not suffering from any disease with a serious impact on public health.
  • Certificate of having no criminal record in the last five years for crimes provided for in Spanish law.
  • Consult in advance the website of the Consulate where you are going to submit the application.
  • Make a sworn translation if the documentation is not in Spanish.
  • If a long-term student reserves accommodation for a short period, she must provide documentation proving said decision.

All of this must be submitted to the Spanish Consulate closest to the student’s place of residence. No more than 6 months before and no later than 15 days before the planned date of travel.

The fees must be paid in advance, and are not returned even if the resolution is not favorable. Once the application is verified, the Consulate will examine it and evaluate it taking into account the fight against illegal immigration.

During this evaluation, the student may be asked to appear at the Consular Office.

The consular office will process the study visa with one of the enabled codes:

SSU: duration of studies less than 6 months.

SLU: duration of studies greater than 6 months.

Requirements that the Spanish course must meet

  • Being accredited center by the Instituto Cervantes (Art. 37 of RD 557/2011).
  • Teach the course in an accredited establishment.
  • Comply with a full-time program.
  • Obtaining a certificate of studies at the end of the course
  • The holiday periods, if they do not match the dates established in the official school calendar, should never be more than 10% of the total duration of the course. Vacations are not mandatory. If the student wants to request them, they must do so at the time of registration, indicating the duration (no more than 10% of the course in periods of full weeks – Monday to Friday -) and the dates, for verification of suitability by the school.
  • Complete and truthful admission letter that complies with:
    • Minimum 20 hours per week for long-term and on-site courses. In short stays there is no minimum number of teaching hours.
    • Total advanced payment.
    • Accommodation details.
    • Holiday period.

DOCUMENTS ISSUED BY iNMSOL

Instituto Mediterráneo Sol, after receiving pre-registration, a copy of the valid passport and payment of the total reservation, will send the student the following documentation:

  • Confirmation of the reservation of the Spanish course (and additional services, if applicable) showing the price breakdown and the total amount received by the school.
  • Invitation letter addressed to the Consulate (admission document).
  • General program of the Spanish course
  • Certificate of accredited centre by the Instituto Cervantes
  • iNMSOL Student Guide
  • Information on the previous steps to follow to start the course: access to the level test and needs questionnaire
  • Information about the first day of class

All documents will be digitally signed and sent by email within 24/48 hours from receipt of documentation and payment from the student.

RESOLUTION

RESOLUTION

Embassies or Consulates have the duty to expressly rule, as soon as possible, on any application received. The official period is 30 days, although it can take up to 3 months. After this time, the request should be understood as rejected due to negative administrative silence.

A. GRANTING OF THE VISA

Once the granting of the visa has been communicated to the student, he or she has a period of 2 months to collect the visa, in person. If you do not do so within that period, it will be understood that you have renounced the authorization granted.

B. VISA REFUSAL

Visa denials will be notified in writing to the interested party and must be signed and sealed by the responsible diplomatic or consular official. The regulations do not prevent the same student from submitting as many visa applications as they wish, regardless of the period between them. It must be taken into account not to apply with repeated requests.

In the event of a denial, the student may file an appeal.

Main reasons for denial

To have a greater chance of success in obtaining the visa, it is recommended to take into account the main causes of denial, and avoid them. These causes are usually:

  • Presentation of false or falsified documents
  • Not having justification of the purpose of the trip
  • Failure to provide evidence of sufficient financial means
  • Having already stayed in the same space for 3 months
  • Posing a threat to public order, security or public health
  • Making unreliable statements during the personal interview (if any), or not knowing the details of the trip
  • Have no intention of leaving the Schengen territory before the visa expires.
  • Not having adequate travel medical insurance.
  • If the applicant has a criminal record in the last five years

Recommendations

In general, it is recommended that the student:

  • Know their application and all the documents she provides.
  • Carry all necessary documents, both originals and copies, in an organized manner.
  • Show evidence of roots in your country of origin, making it clear that you intend to return when you finish your course.
  • Speak clearly and honestly during interviews. You should not hide information.
  • Show enthusiasm for your studies, and how the experience will benefit you in your professional and personal life.
  • Be punctual and wear formal attire. Let him be polite and respectful.
  • Bring prepared answers to possible common questions.
  • Pay attention to the details and the instructions of the consular officer.
  • Go calm and confident to the interview.
  • You have started studying Spanish, either at a local accredited center or online, and have a basic level of Spanish.

STUDENT’S OBLIGATIONS

Before travelling to Spain

PRESENTATION OF DOCUMENTATION AND APPLICATION

The student must provide truthful and legal information and documents.

VISA APPLICATION STATUS

It is essential that the student agrees to inform the school of the status of his or her visa process. This means that it is the responsibility of each student to inform whether their visa has been granted or denied, always in advance of the start of the course (minimum of 10 days before the start date of the course).

In the event that a course begins and the school has not received any notification, the course will be considered started and no refund will be possible. If the student provides a visa denial document after the start of the course, the first month of class, at least, or the period thereof that has elapsed (nor the €200 administration fee) will not be refunded. The student must communicate non-arrival on time at least 10 days in advance. Between 10 and 3 days before, the start day stipulated in the reservation is not guaranteed. Less than 2 days (if you have been given a visa, the incorporation will take place a week later, without class recovery). If you have not been given a visa, the previous rules will apply.

The courses have a start date that must be respected. This date is chosen by the student before making the payment (the beginning of the course must always be a Monday, and the end always on a Friday, except holidays), and is flexible (except for Selectividad EBAU preparation courses). That is why it cannot be changed once the course has been paid for and the school has issued the documents to the consulate.

The only exception to changing course dates, before the start of the course, will be due to the impossibility of obtaining an appointment at the consulate of the country of origin. To do this, the student must provide a document from the consulate that clearly shows the date of the appointment and which student the appointment corresponds to.

This change of course or dates can be made only 1 time for free (and only by providing the document that justifies it). If the student wants to request additional changes, she must pay an additional €200 in administrative costs (as long as the request to change dates is accompanied by a document that justifies it).

TYPE OF COURSE CHOSEN AND CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION

iNMSOL has a website available to students with complete information on the types of courses offered and their characteristics. It also has sufficient communication channels (email, WhatsApp, telephone) to answer all the questions that the student raises. The school’s availability seeks to provide complete and sufficient information before the student’s commitment to enroll, to avoid possible doubts once the course has started.

That is why we ask that the student be informed of the conditions and characteristics of the course that she is reserving, and that she contact us as many times as necessary so that there are no doubts after having started it.

RECRUITMENT THROUGH COLLABORATING AGENCIES

When the student contracts our courses through an agency, they must keep in mind that all communication and all procedures must be done through the agency. iNMSOL will not attend to requests made in parallel.

The conditions for direct hiring or hiring through the agency are the same: doing so through an agency does not exempt the student from the obligations detailed in this section.

iNMSOL is not responsible for the management of collaborating agencies.

Once the in-person course begins

IMPORTANT: this information is always indicative. Each student must request specific requirements from the Immigration Office, as these may vary from time to time.

Upon the student’s arrival in Granada, he or she must begin the procedures to regularize her situation in the country so that she can reside legally.

1) Registration of residency in Granada. It is requested at the City Hall, providing proof of the place of residence and identity document. A rental agreement, recent utility bills to that address, and the consent of the property owner will be required.

2) Request NIE (foreigner identification number). To do this, you must make an appointment at the Police or the Immigration Office, and provide the required documentation.

3) Open a bank account. It will be enough to provide the identity document, the NIE and a document that proves the student status (it may be a letter of certificate of registration for the course provided by the school).

4) Apply for TIE (foreigner’s identity card). This procedure must be completed within the first 30 days of entering Spain, and is requested at the Immigration Office, by appointment. It will be necessary to provide the corresponding completed form, the identity document, the receipt of payment of the tax

Class attendance (mandatory)

Instituto Mediterráneo Sol is a center accredited by the Instituto Cervantes, and affiliated with FEDELE (Federation of Spanish Schools) and other associations such as EEA (Spanish Schools of Andalusia). This implies legal commitments that the school must follow transparently and without exceptions, such as the attendance control of students who obtain a long-term visa.

This is a requirement of the Immigration Office to be able to manage applications for study visas and visa extensions.

To this end, the school has an attendance accounting system and a protocol for notifying Immigration in case of unjustified absences, which we detail below.

ATTENDANCE PERCENTAGE CALCULATION

Students with long-term visa

Students who have obtained a student visa through a course with Instituto Mediterráneo Sol must come to class daily. These students need to demonstrate 100% attendance. A minimum attendance of 85% of contracted lessons will be required to obtain a certificate of attendance at the end of your course. To do this, they have a weekly list in which they must sign every day. This list is located in the desk at Secretaría:

It will be necessary to follow the following guidelines:

  • Students must sign in 2 times each day. They must sign in upon arrival (with signature and time) at the course start time, and must sign in again (signature and time) after the break.
  • Punctuality is required: you have 15 minutes from the start time of class and after the break to sign. After 15 minutes (for the first part of the class) or 5 minutes (for the second part of the class) it will not be possible to sign and it will count as lack of attendance (Lateness).
  • School holidays when there is no class will be counted as attendance.
  • Lack of attendance may be the following:
  • F: lack of attendance. A 10% to 100% discount will be taken for each block in which the student has not attended class.
  • R: delay. A 5% to 100% deduction will be made for each block that the student has arrived at after 15 minutes of the start time (or 5 minutes for the second part of the class). A 10% discount will be made if the student joins 45 minutes after the start time.
  • J: justified absence. Students must provide proof if their lack of attendance is due to a bureaucratic appointment or health problem. If the absence is justified, nothing will be deducted, it will be taken as attendance.

JUSTIFIED ABSENCES

Those that are supported by a truthful document (in which the student’s name, date and time appear clearly) may be considered excused absences. These documents can be:

  • Appointments with the Immigration / Police office
  • Appointments for degree approval
  • Medical appointments

Appointments must coincide with class time to be considered a reason for absence.

CANCELLATION CONDITIONS

The course can only be canceled if the applicant’s visa has been REFUSED. In this case, the student may request a refund by presenting the visa denial document provided by the consular office. Without this document, no refund will be possible.

No cause other than a document from the consular office stating that the student cannot take the course for legal reasons will be taken into consideration.

In the event that the student is not granted the visa, the iNMSOL cancellation conditions are:

  1. Students who have obtained any document (letter of invitation, confirmation of full payment, etc.) from Instituto Mediterráneo Sol to apply for their visa may only request a refund if their visa has been denied, as long as when they have not started the course.
  2. Instituto Mediterráneo Sol will refund all money paid, except from €200 management fees, once the veracity of the documentation proving visa denial has been verified, only if the student has not started the course.
  3. In the event that a course has started, and the school has not received any notification, the course will be considered started and no refund will be possible. If the student provides a visa denial document after the start of the course, the first month of class, at least, or the period thereof that has elapsed (plus the €200 administration fee) will not be refunded. The student must communicate non-arrival on time at least 10 days in advance. Between 10 and 3 days before, the start day stipulated in the reservation is not guaranteed. CHANGE OF COURSE DURING THE STAY

If the student registers and begins an EBAU Selectivity course, and during its course decides to change to an intensive course, a refund of the price difference will not be possible.

You can always add extra (individual) lessons, paying the corresponding cost, but you cannot request a reduction in the classes already contracted.

STUDENTS WHO REGISTER FOR A COURSE ALREADY IN SPAIN

The student must ensure that he/she meets all legal conditions for the course period for which he/she enrolls. In these cases there will be no right to a refund once the course starts.

GENERAL CONDITIONS ACCORDING TO THE NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS IN THE COURSES

The maximum number of students per class of the same level and the same course characteristics is 10, and the minimum is 3. If this minimum is not reached, the following conditions will apply:

1 student or 2 students: the participant will receive 50% of the contracted lessons as one-to-one lessons (1 teacher/1 student) or semi-private lessons (1 teacher/2 students), according to his/her level and needs. In no case should the student pays the difference in price.

3 students or more: participants will receive 100% of the contracted lessons, in group.

Exceptions to the general conditions:

Different conditions will apply to the following courses:

  • DELE preparation courses (2 and 4 lessons per day).
  • Themed courses and courses for specific purposes: Spanish and Latin American literature; Spanish and Latin American history; Spanish and Latin American culture; Spanish for business; medical Spanish and Spanish for tourism.
  • Training courses for ELE teachers (native and non-native).
  • Course for Seniors 50+.

CONTINUATION OF STUDIES

Students who want to continue their studies in Granada and need to renew their study visa must keep the following information in mind:

  1. You will need a certificate from the school (Instituto Mediterráneo Sol), an evaluation of your course and an attendance report. In order to issue all these documents, a minimum attendance of 85% in classes is required.
  2. They will also ask you for an official certificate from the Instituto Cervantes: DELE or SIELE.
  3. It will be necessary for them to prove continuity in their studies, comparing the course program they have taken and the course program they want to take later.
  4. Students who want to continue their studies in a Higher Degree or Intermediate Degree (Grado Medio, Grado Superior, FP) will need to present their registration at the FP (Vocational Training) study center.
  5. Students who enroll in an EBAU Selectivity preparation course and want to renew their visas must pass the EBAU exam and present a registration at the University.

* The problem that arises for our school and all schools is that this is the “norm”, but it is not certain that it applies equally to all students. It will depend a lot on each immigration office, and it is somewhat uncertain.*

We do have verified that Granada Immigration Office knows our school very well, and they know that we strictly follow all the documentation and attendance rules, and they take this into account to facilitate the procedures for our students.
