February 28th is a key date in the Andalusian calendar. It marks the celebration of Andalusia Day: Andalusians commemorate the autonomy of our region and pay tribute to our cultural identity.

If you are studying in Granada, this is an event you simply can’t miss! In this article, we will tell you about the history of this special day: don’t miss the information!

History of Andalusia Day

Andalusia Day commemorates the referendum of February 28, 1980. That day our autonomous community obtained its Statute of Autonomy, achieving a greater degree of self-government within Spain. This milestone was the result of a long political and social process in which the Andalusian people expressed their desire for equality with other historical regions of the country.

One of the main figures behind the autonomy movement was Blas Infante, known as the “Father of the Andalusian Homeland.” His ideas about Andalusian identity and culture laid the foundation for the creation of the Statute of Autonomy of Andalusia.

How do we celebrate the Andalusia Day?

Andalusia Day is celebrated throughout the region with a variety of festive, educational, and cultural activities. Some of the most common traditions include:

  • Institutional ceremonies: Official tributes take place in town halls and other institutions.
  • School activities: In schools, children learn about the history and symbols of Andalusia while enjoying the traditional Andalusian breakfast with bread, olive oil, and ham.

  • Cultural events: Many cities and towns host concerts, theatrical performances, and exhibitions about Andalusian culture.
  • Flags and symbols: Streets are decorated with the green and white colors of the Andalusian flag, and people sing the Hymn of Andalusia, whose lyrics were written by Blas Infante.

Interesting Facts About Andalusia Day

  • The flag and its meaning: The green and white colors symbolize hope and peace, and the center features the Coat of Arms of Andalusia with Hercules and lions, representing strength and history.

  • The role of Blas Infante: Although Blas Infante was executed in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War, his ideas live on in the celebration of Andalusia Day.
