The First Granada Flamenco Biennial Opens with a Historic Concert at the Bullring

flamenco concert in Granada

This coming Friday, September 5, 2025, Granada will experience an unforgettable cultural event: the launch of the First Granada Flamenco Biennial, a festival born with the ambition of becoming an international benchmark for flamenco art.

The opening event will be a free grand concert at the Plaza de Toros, performed by the City of Granada Orchestra (OCG) under the baton of Lucas Macías, featuring a program that blends the finest of the Spanish symphonic tradition with the raw power of flamenco. A unique stage to unite memory, innovation, and discovery around the city’s most universal art form.

A program between the classical and the flamenco

The evening will feature emblematic works from the Spanish repertoire, from Bizet’s Carmen Suite, to the preludes of La Revoltosa (Chapí) and La verbena de la Paloma (Bretón). The fandango from Doña Francisquita (Vives) and the interlude from La leyenda del beso (Vert/Soutullo) will also be performed.

The highlight of the night will be the performance of “Alegro-Soleá”, a piece by Antonio Robledo and Enrique Morente, paying tribute to the great Granada-born flamenco master. The piece will feature the powerful voice of Antonio “El Turry”, accompanied by Juan Carlos Garvayo on piano, Carlos Merino on flamenco percussion, and handclapping by José “El Indio” and Benjamín Santiago “El Moreno”.

The concert will close with Suite No. 1 of El sombrero de tres picos by Manuel de Falla, rounding out a program that builds bridges between the popular and the symphonic, between the classical and the flamenco.

Tickets and access

The concert is free, with invitations available starting Monday, September 1 at 9:00 a.m.. Each person may pick up a maximum of two invitations at:

  • Tourist Office of the Granada City Council (Plaza del Carmen)

  • Box office of the Teatro Isabel la Católica

A city devoted to culture

The Biennial will unfold across Granada’s most iconic heritage venues, strengthening the city’s bid to become European Capital of Culture in 2031. The event is organized by the Granada City Council with the collaboration of Fundación “la Caixa.”

Thus begins a festival set to make the city the epicenter of flamenco, where tradition and innovation come together under the September stars.
