Granada football: history of Granada FC and the famous year 1941

The Andalusian city of Granada is undoubtedly a characteristic and magical place within the Spanish state. There are many attractions and activities to do in this city. Granadinos have many passions, including sports and especially football. The city has strong ties with Granada FC, the main team of the city. The club’s fans are very active and always manage to convey their passion during matches.

Granada’s stadium is called Nuevo Los Cármenes and is located on Pintor Manuel Maldonado Street, in the Zaidín neighbourhood, which is very well connected to the Ronda Sur and one of the city’s main arteries, the Camino de Ronda. Granada plays its home games here and Los Cármenes is owned by the municipality. It takes its name from the former home ground of the red and white club, which was sold after the approval of the majority of the members at an extraordinary general meeting held on 29 August 1995. The stadium was inaugurated through a friendly celebration match between Real Madrid and Bayer Lkeverkusen on 16 May 2005.

Granada FC was founded on April 6, 1931 under the name “Club Recreativo Granada”. 10 years after its foundation, in 1941, the club made its debut in the Spanish First Division. On the 28th of September 2022 it will be the 82nd anniversary of Granada’s first match and first goal in the top flight of Spanish football. The match on September 28, 1941 took place in Los Cármenes, in a Granada-Celta de Vigo game. The match ended in a 1-1 draw with a goal from César. He became the first football player to score a goal in the Spanish top league. The player was a pleasant discovery for the Granada team, as he finished second in the league’s scorers’ table, currently known as the “Pichichi Trophy”.

Not only because it was the club’s debut in the First Division, but also because of some historic goals, such as the 6-0 win over Barcelona or the 8-0 win over Real Oviedo.

Granada Club de Fútbol was founded on 6 April 1931 under the name “Club Recreativo Granada”. As of 17 July 2020, it is 22nd in the historical ranking for points in the First Division. Also 20th in the historical ranking for number of seasons (26), reaching 6th place on two occasions. They were also second in the Spanish Championship-Copa del Generalisimo in the 1958-59 season. In the 2019-20 season, Granada CF reached the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey. Eliminating teams such as the champions of the previous edition, Valencia CF. Ended the season in LaLiga Santander with a 4-0 victory over Athletic Club. This victory allowed them to qualify for the UEFA Europa League for the first time in the history of the Nazarí-based club.
