Flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucia has died Wednesday at age 66 in Mexico .
As reported by the press office of the council of the guitarist’s hometown , the death is confirmed by the nephew of the artist, Ramón Sánchez .
The guitarist died in a hospital in Cancun , which was moved after feeling unwell .
De Lucia felt bad while he was playing football with his son Diego, 10 years old, on the beach, and his current wife transferred him to hospital, where, at the arrival, sat on a stretcher and died , possibly because of a massive heart attack .
His remains are now veiled in a funeral home in Cancun, according to the same sources which indicated that the guitarist ‘s wife , Gabriela Carrasco, flew into Cancun , with her mother . In Mexico there were also Paco de Lucia’s children, according to the consular sources.
Algeciras City Council has decreed three days of official mourning for the death of his favorite son and has also been placed a table with a book of condolence in which citizens can reflect their message . Since Wednesday morning , the flags of all municipal buildings flying at half mast in sign of mourning.
A little bit of history
He was born in December 21, 1947 in Algeciras as Francisco Sánchez Gómez ; at age 7 first picked up a guitar at the hands of his father and later his elder brother . For his Portuguese mother was known as ” Paco el de Lucía”, while in Andalusia, is usually identified by the name of the mother , Lucía Gomes.
As a young boy, toured the world with various flamenco shows and his consecration would come in the seventies with memorable performances in the Palau de Barcelona in 1970 and in Teatro Real and Teatro Monumental of Madrid in 1975 , and his first live recording was from the Theatre Royal and was his first LP Gold
In Madrid was where the mythical couple El Camaron – De Lucia, emerged , as virtuous and purist as renewing of flamenco and resulted in more than ten studio albums , including El Duende Flamenco (1972) and Fuente y Caudal ( 1973).
He take contact with Brazilian music and jazz, and incorporated new records to his guitar , elements in which lies the true revolution of his style . First renovator , Paco de Lucia dared to fuse flamenco with classical music of Falla, Rodrigo and Albéniz, and with the jazz of Pedro Iturralde , Chick Corea , John McLaughlin , Al Di Meola and Larry Coryell .
Paco de Lucia has died without seeing his last published work, Cancion andaluza , an album of songs which would be launched in late April , as confirmed to Efe different sources.
