Meaning: Who wants to appear elegant and clean has to be ready to suffer some pain. It is particularly used when referring to clothing: especially for the women that wear high heels. The general meaning refers to the fact that everybody has to bear some troubles to obtain what he/she wants. This proverb is not much used in Great Britain.
