Every December 6th, we celebrate Constitution Day in Spain.
This date commemorates the approval of the Spanish Constitution of 1978. At iNMSOL, we want to highlight the importance of this document. Do you know it marked the end of the Franco dictatorship? And laid the foundation for democracy. Thus began a new era of peaceful coexistence in Spain.
The Origin of Constitution Day in Spain
On December 6, 1978, the Spanish people went to the polls to vote in a historic referendum. The new Constitution, or Carta Magna, was approved, designed to:
- Guarantee the rights and freedoms of all citizens.
- Establish a rule-of-law state.
- Organize the country’s political and territorial structure.
Since 1983, this day has been a national holiday to honor the democratic values and political consensus that made this transformation possible.
How do we celebrate Constitution Day?
Constitution Day is an opportunity to reflect on the importance of democratic principles in daily life. Among the most notable activities are:
- The Opening of the Congress of Deputies, allowing citizens to visit the place where the nation’s laws are debated and passed.
- Institutional Ceremonies, where various authorities, including the King and government representatives, participate in official events that highlight the historical significance of the Constitution.
- Educational and Cultural Activities, which explain the history and impact of the Constitution on Spanish life. Often schools and media conduct these events.
Constitution Day is not just a reminder of the past but also an invitation to think about the future of democracy in Spain.
