How to Use Spanish Verb Tenses to Talk About the Future

Using Verb Tenses to Speak About the Future in Spanish

In the Spanish language, takling about the future involves more than simply using the future tense. There are lots of verbal tenses and structures to refer to future actions or situations. At iNMSOL, through our grammar courses and spanish intensive courses, we teach our students to master these structures. This article adresses the use of different verb tenses to express future in Spanish.

Simple Future (Futuro Simple)

Formation and Usage

The simple future is formed by adding the following endings to the verb infinite:

  • é
  • ás
  • á
  • emos
  • éis
  • án

It is used to talk about actions that will take place in the future.

Examples

  • “Mañana lloverá.” (It will rain tomorrow).
  • “Viajaré a España el próximo año.” (I will travel to Spain next year).

Present Indicative

Using present for the Future

Although the simple present describes actions happening now, it can also talk about plans or future events which are certain or scheduled.

Examples

  • “Mañana tengo una reunión.” (I have a meeting tomorrow).
  • “El tren sale a las seis.” (Train leaves at 6).

Periphrastic Constructions

Ir a + Infinite

A common structure to express future is  “ir a” + infinite. It refers to intentions or near-future plans.

Examples

  • “Voy a estudiar español.” (I’m going to study Spanish).
  • “Vamos a cenar fuera esta noche.” (We are going to dine out tonight).

 “Tener que” + Infinitivo

This structure express an obbligation o necessity to perform an action in the future.

Examples

  • “Tengo que terminar mi tarea mañana.” (I have to finish my homework tomorrow).
  • “Tienes que llamar a tu abuelo.” (You have to call your grandparents).

Near or Immediate Future

Using “Estar a punto de” + Infinitive

This expression indicates actions that are about to happen in the very near future.

Examples

  • “Estoy a punto de salir.” (I’m about to leave).
  • “El espectáculo está a punto de comenzar.” (The show is about to start).

Condicional Simple

Use for Hypothetical Future

The simple conditional talks about future situations that are hypothetical or less certain.

Examples

  • “Si tuviera dinero, compraría una casa.” (If I had money, I would buy a house).
  • “Podría visitarte el próximo mes.” (I could visit you next month).
