The 38th edition of the Feria del Libro (The Book Fair) will take place in Granada from 10 May to 19 May. This year, its location will be among Fuente de las Batallas, Carrera de la Virgen and Plaza del Humiladero. With the last edition, the record of participation was broken with a total of 62 companies spread over 80 exhibitor stands, which forced the extension of the FLG site, which is why it is considered one of the major fairs in Spain.
Among the organizational innovations this year is the investment of the usual route of the Fair to boost the flow of visitors along the Carrera de la Virgen, allowing a progressive and linear growth of the site.
The motto will be: “Pedro Antonio de Alarcón y la Granada del siglo XIX”, coinciding with the centennial of the premiere of “El sombrero de tres picos” composed by Manuel de Falla, Based on the book by the same name by the same author.
Granada’s book fair, before and now
The Granada Book Fair has been growing for several years in terms of sales, public, number of exhibitors and, above all, cultural activities. It has become a great citizen event, with thousands of people filling every space of the Fair every year. In this edition a new and stimulating process of internationalization is approached, facilitated by the fact that Granada has been designated by UNESCO as Creative City
The participating institutions of the Book Fair have agreed to institute a new figure, that of Ciudad Unesco Invitada Thus. Each year the Granada Book Fair will designate one of UNESCO’s Cities of Literature as a special guest, which will allow the implementation of an international program and offer new opportunities for knowledge of authors and cultures. The first UNESCO City invited to the Granada Book Fair is the English city of Nottingham.
The city of Lord Byron and D. H. Lawrence is also well known for being the scene of the famous novel by Walter Scott, “Ivanhoe” in which Robin Hood appears. Granada and Nottingham are preparing a special program of English authors who will attend the Book Fair. The program of activities that Nottingham brings to Granada will begin with the participation of the director of Nottingham UNESCO City of Literature, Sandeep Mahal, in the opening speeches of the Fair tomorrow, May 10.
Another novelty is the creation of the Independent Space. In order to guarantee the participation of those publishers with less visible catalogs, the FLG offers a space that will become a bookstore when it can circulate inside.
These editorials keep the experience of reading alive as a ritual, material and corporeal, turning each book into a living and transforming object. A way has been found to make the independent publishing universe present.
Books for everyone
The objective for this FLG2019 is also to attract adolescents with proposals designed by their referents and coordinate the children’s offer of different agents, provoking a magnificent experience with literary yincanas and playful proposals linked to characters such as Robin Hood.
Finally, the family activities will rely on great moments such the meeting with Maite Carranza. This famous children’s author or he presentation of the exhibition associated with the last editorial project coordinated by Fernando Marías addressed to the young public. They will be able to enjoy the dialogue of the bookcase group SQUAD.
In summary, what does the Book Fair represent? A walk through the center of the the most beautiful city of Spain, pure culture with books, stories, novels, history, music, science … the best schedule to enjoy culture with the family. Also in this editon we are going to celebrate Granada as City of Literacy and Friend of Children, expanding and improving the spaces dedicated to youth.
